The Verdict on Whether Prose Haircare Is Worth the Price

The Verdict on Whether Prose Haircare Is Worth the Price

This post is not sponsored or endorsed by Prose in any way.

Ask any woman what she thinks about her hair, and she’ll have plenty to tell you. For me, my hair is straight, slippery, thick, and heavy. It does one thing and one thing only: Look good down. It does that very well, but that’s all it does — it doesn’t curl, it doesn’t tease, it doesn’t stay in up-dos very well. In fact, for my wedding, I told my stylist not to even touch it with a curling iron because we would doom ourselves to failure.

But I also have oily skin. So combine that with my heavy straight hair, and a lot of the time, my hair pulls itself very flat by the end of the day. I’ve tried everything to get my oiliness under control — yes, including washing it less often. I washed it every 2–3 days for like, two years. It didn’t help.

Enter: Prose Custom Hair Care

Prose is a company that creates 100% custom shampoo, conditioner, and other hair-care formulas from scratch. They use info about your hair, your lifestyle, and your preferences to create your formula. When I came across this, I was super intrigued. Could this be the solution to my lifelong annoyance with my oily hair?

You start by filling out a questionnaire. They ask you things like how long your hair is, how thick it is, how often you exercise, and even your zip code (humidity, pollution, etc.). At the end, you even have the option of sending them a photo of your hair from the side (for length) and the part (for thickness). Then you choose a scent and check out!

Personally, I chose the basics: pre-shampoo mask, sulfate-free shampoo, and conditioner. It came in really nice packaging, and as you can see from the photo above, it even had my name on it! All the materials are really nice and I love the scent I chose.

My instructions told me to use the pre-shampoo mask twice a week and to leave it on wet hair for 15–30 minutes before showering and shampooing. It also recommended using 4–6 pumps each time for the shampoo and conditioner, however often I usually wash. Personally, I’ve found that 2 pumps every day or every other day is enough for me. That’s a relief, because the bottles aren’t super big and the price isn’t super low.

Did it work???

I’m happy to report: YES. Of course, I do still get oily from time to time, but overall, I am SO HAPPY with my hair right now. A bit part of that may have been my switch to a sulfate-free formula, but I could tell the difference right away. My hair felt different wet and dry, and I actually think it dries faster now (which is HUGE for me).

Honestly, I’m surprised how happy I am with this product. I really didn’t expect to like it for the price.

So how much does it cost?

I had a $10 sign-up discount when I first ordered, and my total was $78. Shipping is free. I knew that was a stretch, but I figured I would give it a shot and if it didn’t work, I just wouldn’t buy it again.

Fast forward three months later, and I’m super happy with it, and stoked to realize that they actually have a subscription option that saves money. If you subscribe to refills (every 1, 2, or 3 months), you save 20%.

As mentioned, even though I wash my hair often, I haven’t gone through my bottles very fast. So now I’ll be receiving my box every three months, and paying $70 every time it ships — that’s about $23 a month. Not too shabby, in my opinion!

If you want to try Prose for yourself, I can send you a referral email and $10 off your first order (that will also earn me $10 in referral credit, woohoo). Unfortunately, there’s no link to copy and paste here, but if you shoot me an email and let me know, I can send it your way!

Happy hair days, my friends. Stay strong out there!
