How eMeals Helps Me Plan Dinner and Save Money
An affordable meal-planning service with a ton of flexibility
My husband and I are really picky eaters. I’ve gotten much better since I was as a child, but I still don’t like most vegetables, any seafood, sushi, eggs, bananas, stuff with a squishy or lumpy texture, and a ton of other things.
Recently, we found ourselves eating the same things over and over again—usually some variety of chicken breast and french fries. So we started ordering out far more often than we knew was wise, even though we had plenty of groceries in the kitchen. We just didn’t want anything we had the ingredients to make.
Like so many others, I get home from a long day at my 9–5 (8–6:30?) and have very little time or energy to cook. And I’m on a budget. So one weekend, I told myself I was going to sit down with Pinterest and my cookbooks , make a list of new, exciting-but-easy recipes., and then put together a grocery shopping list for the coming week That way, I could actually make some meals we were excited to eat.
Enter timely, slightly creepy Facebook ads.
A service called eMeals caught my eye (mostly because they used a giant photo of Dave Ramsey as the ad creative). They were offering to do exactly what I was about to do manually, and they had a 14-day free trial.
Since starting my subscription, I've made some really yummy dinners, like chicken tortellini soup, buffalo chicken and rice bowls, Asian pepper steak, lasagna soup (YUP), and shrimp and sausage creole. SO. GOOD.
What is eMeals?
eMeals is a meal-planning service. It’s NOT one of those companies that ships you all the ingredients for a set number of meals each week, like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh. With the level of pickiness that exists in my household, a service like that was just never going to be worth the cost.
Instead, eMeals presents you with a selection of recipes every week, and then you pick the ones you want to make—as many or as few as you want. Then their app generates a custom shopping list of everything you need to make those meals. If you live in a participating area, you can even send your list right to Amazon Fresh, Walmart Grocery, Instacart, or Kroger ClickList. You can also save recipes to your "Favorites" and add them to your weekly line-up whenever you want.
They have a ton of different “plans” from which you can choose your recipes. They let you switch between plans any time, so you can add recipes from different plans to the same week's list. You also choose whether you want recipes for 1-2 servings or for 3-6 servings. Their plans include, as of the day I type this post:
